A recent National Geographic article highlights bamboo shoots as a “superfood”: rich in protein, fiber, essential minerals and antioxidants. Even more compelling: regular consumption is linked to improved blood sugar control, better gut health, and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
Across Asia, bamboo shoots are already a staple ingredient. In Uganda, however, this potential remains largely unexplored and mainly limited to the Malewa in Mbale region.
We often talk about bamboo in terms of climate resilience, income generation, and sustainable materials. But there is a strong case to also look at bamboo as a food crop: one that can contribute to nutrition, food security, and diversified farmer incomes.
As bamboo Uganda, we look at bamboo from all possible angles: whether as a construction material, a fuel, as part of agroforestry or as a superfood.
We are currently looking into the scalability of bamboo as a food.
