🌿 Building Uganda’s National Bamboo Policy — The Dialogue Continues
Following the National Bamboo Dialogue held on 23rd October ’25, the process of shaping Uganda’s National Bamboo Policy is moving forward with a series of committee meetings and national dialogue workshops, supported and co-operated by Enabel.
During the first meeting, a National Bamboo Workgroup was formed, bringing together representatives from government institutions, the private sector, and civil society. Three thematic committees were established to focus on key areas of the bamboo value chain: Bamboo Agronomy, Bamboo Processing and Bamboo Architecture.
Starting this April, these committees will begin meeting to discuss topics such as:
• bamboo resource mapping and data
• plantation management and standards
• processing and industry development
• bamboo in construction and infrastructure
• market development and investment
Alongside the committee meetings, two more national dialogue workshops will be organised throughout the year, bringing together the entire group of stakeholders to review progress and contribute their expertise. See the calendar attached.
These dialogues are essential.
A national policy creates a framework for government-backed implementation and enforcement. For Uganda’s bamboo sector, this means that the discussions happening today will shape future standards, incentives, regulations, and opportunities across the entire value chain.
Ensuring that farmers, processors, architects, researchers, investors, and policymakers are all part of the conversation is therefore critical. The more voices and experience we bring into the process, the stronger and more practical the policy will be.
The development of a National Bamboo Policy represents an important milestone for Uganda’s green economy, creating the conditions for sustainable bamboo farming, stronger markets, and long-term investment in the sector.
